What Is Tree Pruning And Why Is It Important?

Updated: Sep 18, 2018

All trees require maintenance, and the most common process for tree maintenance is pruning. Trees grow well with natural pruning, but the landscape of trees require much more care to maintain their structure and aesthetic. Pruning can include the removal of any part of trees, like branches, stems, buds or roots.

Pruning can also be done to shape young trees, to make sure that they are going to grow properly, which is detrimental to their growth.

We cannot leave out large, established trees either!

The most common types of tree pruning are: Crown Thinning, Crown Raising, Crown Reduction, and Crown Cleaning.

Crown Thinning is the process of selectively removing branches on trees throughout the crown. This fosters better form and health by increasing the infiltration of light and air.

Crown Raising is the process of removing lower branches on trees to allow more clearance above lawns, sidewalks, streets, etc.

Crown Reduction is the process of removing larger branches at the top of the tree to reduce its height. When properly pruned, crown reduction is different from topping because branches are removed immediately, leaving no stubs.

Crown Cleaning is the process of removing the selective removal of dead, dying and disease wood from the crown.

Pruning can promote the health of your trees, by removing dead or dying branches injured by disease, insect infestation, animals, storms, or other adverse damage. It is also paramount to remove branches that rub together, as well as branch stubs, in order for them and the tree to continue growing properly. Pruning can help the aesthetic of a tree, the health of a tree, but also the health of people. Removing hazardous branches is very important to prevent any future accidents, and in turn it will create a supportive structure for a tree. If you do not prune your trees, they are at risk of becoming deformed!

The perfect time to get your trees pruned is towards the end of winter, right before spring comes and the trees start to grow at immense rates. That way, you have gotten through the rough winter season, and can be prepared for your beautiful green trees to grow in properly.
